Transkaukazja in Germany: Exhibition
2011-01-05

Transkaukazja exhibition „ Armenia/Georgia InsideOut“ was successfully opened on 10 January in Gallery Alte Feuerwache Loschwitz, Dresden. The organiser from Kultur Aktiv, Marcus Oertel, warmly welcomed more than 120 people, who were greatly impressed by the photos of outstanding photographers from Armenia, Georgia, Germany and Austria.

Five out of ten photographers (Aleksey Manukyan, Elena Pagel, Yuri Mechitov, Harald Schluttig and Holger Wendland who is also the curator of the exhibition) were as well present there and with their explanations to the visitors of the exhibition helped better understanding these two Caucasian countries, peculiarities, lifestyle etc. During the exhibition the music group Aguas from Dresden with Armenian singer Grigor Shagoyan presented beautiful old Armenian songs, which the guests of the exhibition enjoyed very much. It is worth to mention the food from Armenian and Georgian typical cuisine that gave another exotic shade to the exhibition, prepared by Kultur Aktiv’s volunteer from Armenia, Meri Charukhchyan, and Patrick Puri.

Each photographer presented series of photos with a specific topic. Amazing were the photos of Yuri Mechitov about Sergey Parajanov, Georgian film director and artist of Armenian descent. Elena Pagel impressed with portraits of people with this peculiar Caucasian character on their faces. With the photos of Aleksey Manukyan people got to know about horrible earthquake that took place in Armenia in 1988 which especially ruined the city he is coming from. Karen Grigoryan showed the audience portraits in mysterious but still romantic black and white. Siegfried Woeber took part with wonderful photos of Georgia. Georgia was also presented by photos of Elena Rakviashvili with young Georgian soldiers. Interesting was to see the pictures of beautiful landscapes of Armenia with the holy mountain Ararat, river Arax and Armenian churches from the point of view of two different photographers the first being Zaven Sargsyan, who lives in Armenia and Carlos Jose Bourdijan presenting Armenian Diaspora abroad. Impressive photos of Armenian people were demonstrated by Harald Schluttig, photographer from Dresden.

The exhibition will go on till the 6th of February. With this exhibition we want to make a step to bring these two different regions – Germany and Caucasus – close together. We hope that for German audience it’s a great option to discover for themselves interesting facts about Caucasus.
